HCP Associates Completes Fifth Iteration of Commercial Recycling Study for Pinellas County Solid Waste
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., July 29, 2026—HCP Associates recently completed the fifth iteration of the Commercial Recycling Awareness Survey for Pinellas County Solid Waste (PCSW), which manages the county’s landfill, Waste-to-Energy facility, and recycling programs.
The biennial residential recycling study surveyed 800 Pinellas County residents, providing the department with insight into residents’ waste and recycling habits, as well as their familiarity with resources.
The 2026 telephonic survey reported that 80% of Pinellas County residents recycled in one or more ways, including curbside recycling, utilizing recycling services at a multifamily complex, or taking recyclables to a county drop-off center. However, some persistent knowledge gaps remained, particularly related to proper rechargeable battery and plastic bag disposal.
“It has been incredibly interesting to see the trends surrounding this survey over the last six years,” said Jack Smith, Director of Community Insights and Engagement at HCP Associates. “Since the implementation of this biennial study in 2018, we have observed residents’ interest and awareness surrounding recycling practices increase within Pinellas County, and we look forward to continuing to fill in the gaps in research as time goes on.”
Overall, most Pinellas County residents continue to participate in and are aware of recycling practices. However, there remain opportunities for PCSW to educate the public on proper disposal and recycling practices.
